Soil carbon sequestration

Soil carbon projects

You can discover how the Wilmot Cattle Company in New South Wales' Northern Tablelands is revolutionising agriculture with the backing of a High Impact Partnership grant from the Primary Industries Productivity and Abatement Program. This project is being delivered in collaboration with Atlas Carbon, enabling farmers to utilise the Maia Grazing Tool to optimise grazing strategies and enhance soil carbon storage. With this funding, Wilmot is extending its innovative soil carbon sequestration practices to 12 additional farms, covering an impressive 20,700 hectares. This project prioritizes grazing management for frequency, intensity and duration, promoting environmental sustainability, soil health and farm profitability.

In the following videos, we delve into the management of soil carbon projects. Discover how Wilmot's High Impact Partnership is supporting 12 property owners in New South Wales as they plan and implement their own soil projects.

Soil CRC webinars

These webinars will assist land managers to understand the potential to build soil carbon using advice from regional growers groups.

South West Slopes of NSW

This webinar covers:

  • What soil carbon levels can be expected in South West Slopes region of NSW?
  • What factors influence soil carbon?
  • What management practices can be used to increase soil carbon level?

Presented by: Dr Cassandra Schefe (AgriSci) and Dr Karl Andersson, (NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development).

Hosted by: Holbrook Landcare Network.

Central West of NSW

This webinar covers:

Hosted by Central West Farming Systems.

The Riverina

Building Soil Carbon through land management strategies

This webinar is focused on tailored strategies for soil carbon management for farms located in the Riverina including:

  • Introduction to soil carbon and its role in farming systems.
  • Practices that can increase soil carbon in mixed farming systems, including eligible land management practices for potential soil carbon projects.
  • Insights from soil experts’ valuable research including managing soil constraints.
  • Practical approaches to enhance soil health and boost carbon sequestration in the region’s agricultural landscape.
  • Benefits of enhancing soil carbon.
  • Carbon market opportunities for local farmers.

Presented by: Dr Karl Andersson (NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development) and Dr Abe Gibson (Southern Cross University).

Hosted by: Riverine Plains.

Building Soil Carbon through management practices

Join Dr. Abe Gibson and Dr. Cassandra Schefe as they present a range of management practices farmers from the Riverina region can use to build soil carbon.

Presented by: Dr Abe Gibson (Southern Cross University) and Dr Cassandra Schefe, (AgriSci).

Hosted by: Farmlink.

Southwest NSW and the Mallee

This webinar provides an overview of:

  • Soil carbon dynamics, including the challenges of building Soil Organic Carbon in low-rainfall (Mallee) soils
  • Practical strategies for managing and maintaining SOC, from clay and organic amendments to reducing soil constraints
  • Managing sandy soils and leveraging soil amendments to boost carbon storage
  • Considerations for farmers exploring soil carbon projects.
