Energy efficient washing machines and dryers

  • Upgrade to an energy efficient front-loader washing machine to cut water use by up to 70% compared to a standard top loader washing machine.

  • Upgrade to an efficient heat pump dryer to cut running costs by 60% compared to a standard vented dryer.

How it works

A front-load washing machine cleans using gravity instead of a full water-filled tub. It gently tumbles the clothes, cleaning more effectively, and requiring far less water and energy for heating than a traditional top loader.

A heat pump dryer recycles heat inside a sealed loop to preserve it, compared to traditional dryers that constantly heat the air and then pump it out.

Who it’s best for

An efficient washing machine or dryer is a smart upgrade for your household or business if you want to enjoy faster, gentler washing, lower bills, and less environmental impact.

Consider an upgrade if your washing machine or dryer:

  • has broken down or needs an expensive repair
  • is over 10 years old
  • does 4 or more washing loads a week
  • doesn’t offer the convenience and control you need.

Get started

  1. Choose the washing machine and dryer

    • Compare models and prices online or in-store, read reviews and ask friends and family for recommendations.
    • Check running costs with the Energy Rating calculator.
    • Check your model has at least 3.5 stars on the Energy Rating Label and Water Rating Label. Each extra star could save you hundreds.
    • Choose a delay-start function on washing machines for off-peak use and an auto-sensing function for dryers.
  2. Install your washing machine and dryer

    • Install it yourself or hire a tradesperson. Most retailers include delivery and installation when you buy the appliance.
    • Recycle your old washing machine or dryer. Ask your retailer or find a local drop-off and pick-up at recycling near you.
  3. Get the most out of your new washing machine and dryer

    • Wash your clothes in cold water.
    • Use eco-mode or a short cycle whenever possible.
    • Run your washing machine and dryer with a full load.
    • Empty the heat pump dryer water tank regularly or connect it directly to your drain line.
    • Use the sun to dry clothes for free.
    • Clean the lint dryer filter after every load.
