NSW Climate and Energy Action

It all adds up to net zero

We all play a part in reaching net zero

Find out what net zero means for our everyday lives and how we can all help to get there.

To reach net zero, we need to work with households, businesses, Traditional Owners, local governments and organisations.

Together we can protect the lands we walk on and the communities we walk with.

Together we can reach net zero

By working together, and making small changes, we can all reduce our emissions. By doing this, we’ll protect our communities, our way of life, our economic prosperity and the environment.

We make roughly 35,000 decisions a day. That's 35,000 opportunities to reduce emissions, every day.

In NSW, that means 8.56 million people making decisions that can increase or reduce the 114.5 million tonnes of emissions NSW produces each year.

That's about 13.7 tonnes for each of us each year.

No one decision will change the world on its own, but they all add up to net zero.

Reaching net zero emissions is a balancing act.

For every molecule of greenhouse gas we emit we must do something to balance and achieve total net zero emissions. Right now, we're out of balance. This is causing the climate to change.

To achieve net zero, we need to work together to reduce emissions and tip the scales back our way. That's because net zero is good for us, our planet, and our economy.

New renewable technologies means jobs, business opportunities, and reliable, affordable clean energy for more comfortable homes, cheaper energy bills, healthier living, and green spaces for our community and the next generation.

With a legislated pledge for New South Wales by 2050, it has to be a group effort and we're already making progress.

We can't do this alone, but together it all adds up to net zero.

Take action today to reduce emissions

When small actions are repeated every day by millions of people across NSW, Australia and the world, they have great impact. Learn more about net zero and what people like you are doing to reach our net zero targets.

Our net zero commitment

The NSW Government has set our net zero targets in law through the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Act (2023).

With the Net Zero Plan, we have the framework in place to help us reach net zero by 2050.
