Switchboard upgrade

Power your modern home safely and unlock the potential for future energy-saving upgrades with a modern switchboard.

How it works

Your switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system, distributing power and protecting against overloads. An upgrade is sometimes needed to:

  • replace an outdated fuse box
  • switch from a low-capacity panel (60 or 100 amps) to a new one with higher capacity (200 amps)
  • install safety devices to meet new standards.

It also means you can safely install modern electric upgrades like solar and heat pump water heaters.

Who it’s best for

This is an essential safety and functional upgrade, not an optional one. If you’re a home or small business owner, you may need an upgrade if you:

  • install major new electrical appliances like an EV charger, induction cooktop, or a central heat pump system
  • plan to install rooftop solar and/or a home battery
  • live in an older home (25 years or older) with an original panel or fuse box
  • experience frequently flickering lights, buzzing sounds or other issues with your switchboard.

Get started

  1. Choose your switchboard upgrade

    • You must consult a licensed electrician to get a professional home assessment. You can read reviews online or ask friends and family for recommendations to find a suitable electrician.
    • Your electrician will assess your current and planned future electrical needs (like a future EV or kitchen remodel) to recommend the correct panel size.
    • Ask about installing solar-ready or smart panel technologies. This will help you prepare for potential future upgrades so you can get more control and savings.
    • You may not realise you need a switchboard upgrade until you have an inspection to install other new energy saving upgrades, like solar.
  2. Install your switchboard upgrade

    • Use a licensed electrician to ensure it is a compliant installation that meets standards and safety codes.
    • Check if your council requires a permit. Your electrician should manage all required permits and inspections.
  3. Get the most out of your switchboard upgrade

With your new switchboard installed, you can now confidently and safely add energy-saving upgrades like solar and EV chargers.
