Feel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter with an affordable ceiling fan. They’re cheap to run, easy to use and can help cut your energy bills all year round.
How it works
Ceiling fans move air around to help you feel more comfortable without changing the room’s temperature. In summer, setting the fan to spin counterclockwise creates a cooling effect. In winter, setting the fan to run clockwise on low speed pushes warm air down and creates a warming effect.
Who it’s best for
A ceiling fan is a smart and affordable option for your household or small business if you want to:
- stay cool on a budget
- cut air conditioning bills
- find a low-cost way to improve comfort in bedrooms, living spaces or patios.
How much you can save
Save on cooling costs by running a fan for as little as 1-3 cents per hour.
How much it will cost
Get started
-
Choose your fan
- Decide what room you want to install your fan in. Choose smaller fans with smaller blades for spaces like bedrooms. Choose bigger fans with bigger blades for larger rooms and living spaces .
- Choose a Direct Current (DC) motor fan where possible. These are quieter and 70% more efficient than an Alternating Current (AC) motor fan model.
- Look for features like a remote control, dimmable LED lights and a reversible motor for winter use.
- For smart homes, choose a DC fan that connects with your system so you can control when it runs.
-
Install your fan
A licensed electrician must be used for a safe, secure installation. They must:
- use a ceiling electrical box that’s specifically rated to support the weight and vibration of a fan.
- install at a safe ceiling height.
-
Get the most out of your new ceiling fan
- In summer: set the blades to spin counter-clockwise to create a downward breeze.
- In winter: set the blades to spin clockwise on the lowest speed to gently circulate warm air without creating a draft.
- Every day: When you’re home, open windows to create a cross breeze. Turn off your fan when you leave the room (fans cool people, not rooms).
- Every season: clean the blades regularly to prevent dust buildup and keep the fan running efficiently.
How to get financial help
There’s currently no NSW Government incentive or rebate available for ceiling fans.
The Australian Government's Home Energy Upgrades Fund covers out-of-pocket costs with low-interest green loans from participating banks and lenders.
