How to disconnect or abolish your gas connection
If you don’t need gas anymore, you can temporarily disconnect or permanently remove your gas connection. This is a great way to avoid ongoing network fees.
Both options have different costs and timeframes, so it’s best to check the details with your energy retailer.
Temporary disconnection
If you need your gas turned off for a short time, contact your energy retailer to request a temporary disconnection. There are 2 ways this can be done:
- Attaching meter locks and plugs. This is the quickest option, and usually only takes two business days.
- Disconnecting the service in street. This takes longer, usually about 20 business days.
Your gas network operator will decide which option is best for you.
Keep in mind
Temporary gas disconnection leaves the connecting pipes in place. This means there will still be a live gas pipeline on your property. Your gas retailer will continue to check and service the meter. You may still get charges and quarterly services to check for gas leaks.
Permanent removal (abolishment)
If you no longer require gas at your property, you can request permanent removal. This can take up to 20 business days.
Contact your energy retailer for more information.
Find a gas network operator
If you want to connect your home or business to gas, you’ll need to contact the network operator for your region. Keep in mind the gas network isn’t available everywhere, and not properties are easily connected.
You can check the map below to see which areas have gas networks. Even in these areas, gas pipes might not run down your street. In that case, you may need to cover the cost of extending the pipes to your home or business.
