Energy efficient fridges and freezers

Person using fridge

Your fridge runs 24/7 and makes up to 13% of your energy bill. Upgrade to an energy efficient model to save hundreds of dollars over time.

How it works

Energy efficient fridges or freezers use better insulation and smarter compressors to keep food fresh while using far less energy. This cuts your running costs.

Who it’s best for

An energy efficient fridge or freezer is a smart investment if you’re a renter, homeowner or small business owner looking for a simple, plug-in upgrade with no complex installation needed.

Consider an upgrade if your fridge or freezer:

  • has broken down or needs expensive repair
  • is over 10 years old
  • is costing your small business too much money and you want to cut energy costs.

KWH explanation
  1. Choose your fridge and freezer

    • Compare models and prices online or in-store, read reviews, and ask friends and family for recommendations.
    • Pick the right size. Too big wastes energy, too small won’t cool properly. You’re looking for a fridge that will be two-thirds full most of the time.
    • Consider a freezer-on-top model for the best efficiency.
    • Look for at least 3 stars on the Energy Rating Label. Each extra star will save you hundreds.
    • Check running costs with the Energy Rating calculator. The fridge with the lowest annual energy use in kWH will be the cheapest to run.
  2. Install your fridge and freezer

    • Plug it in yourself or hire a tradesperson. Most retailers include delivery and installation when you buy the appliance.
    • Recycle your old fridge or freezer safely, especially old fridges with refrigerants that contribute to ozone depletion or climate change. Ask your retailer or find a local drop-off and pick-up at recycling near you
  3. Get the most out of your new fridge and freezer

    • Set your fridge to 3–4°C and your freezer to –15 to –18°C for optimal food safety and efficiency.
    • Keep it out of direct sunlight.
    • Clean the door seals regularly and replace them if they wear out to prevent cold air escaping.
