The NSW Gas Statement outlines the actions the NSW Government is taking to maintain secure, reliable and affordable gas supply for industry and consumers while NSW transitions to net zero.

Gas continues to play a critical, defined role in NSW’s energy transition. It remains essential for hard to electrify industries and manufacturing processes that rely on gas for their operations, including in the mining, agriculture, construction and food and beverage sectors. Gas also helps provide back-up electricity when demand is high and or when available renewable energy generation or storage is insufficient.

As NSW’s energy system transforms, the state faces challenges including gas supply pressures, infrastructure constraints and changing market conditions. The NSW Gas Statement outlines how we are helping to ensure gas remains available when and where it is needed. The Statement provides an overview of the state's gas outlook and the actions being taken to support energy security, economic growth and the orderly transition to a net zero economy.

These actions focus on:

  • securing and diversifying gas supply
  • addressing infrastructure constraints across the gas supply chain
  • practical and cost-effective reductions in gas use where it makes sense
  • maintaining strong regulatory and safety frameworks.

The Statement was jointly developed by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.
