Public consultation on NSW retail electricity tariff reforms
We’re ensuring customers have clear information, real choices and protection from bill shock as smart meters are rolled out and tariffs become increasingly more complex, to better reflect the true costs of electricity supply.
From 11 December 2025 to 2 February 2026, we undertook public consultation on the implementation of retail electricity tariff reforms in NSW. Our aim was to strengthen consumer protections in the evolving energy market.
The consultation sought views on:
- how to prohibit retailers from automatically assigning customers to demand tariffs without their explicit informed consent, as committed in the NSW Consumer Energy Strategy
- whether NSW should implement a consumer safeguard that would require designated retailers to offer flat tariffs to customers with smart meters.
The consultation received 13 submissions, covering the views of retailers, distribution network service providers (DNSPs) and consumer groups.
Read the consultation paper, see the submissions received, and read our consultation report.
