We are investing in NSW’s renewable fuels sector to create jobs, drive regional economic growth,  strengthen the state’s energy security and support our transition to net zero. NSW Government support for projects to build biomethane supply chains is essential to achieve this.

Biomethane is a low carbon alternative for natural gas. It will help decarbonise the hard-to-abate industrial facilities that are responsible for almost 30% of our state’s total emissions.

The Renewable Gas Production Program is part of the Industrial Decarbonisation Initiative and a core component of the NSW Renewable Fuels Strategy

About the funding

There is $40 million available to support the commercial deployment of biomethane production facilities and associated infrastructure in NSW. The Renewable Gas Production Program covers up to 50% of eligible costs for these projects.

Eligible applicants

To be eligible for this grant, you must plan to own or have operational control over a biomethane production plant in NSW. By the full application stage, you must also have agreements in place with:

  • NSW feedstock suppliers for biomethane production
  • NSW gas network owners or operators to enable injection into the gas pipeline
  • an industrial off-taker in NSW that will use the biomethane.

Read the funding guidelines for the full eligibility criteria.

Eligible projects

We are supporting projects that operate across the full biomethane value chain. They should integrate feedstock preparation, production, delivery and injection into the NSW gas network.

To be eligible, your project must use NSW feedstock to produce front-of-meter biomethane, delivering at least 0.1 petajoules (PJ) per year to decarbonise NSW industrial facilities. It must be operational and inject biomethane into the gas network on or before 30 June 2030.

Funding can be used for capital works and infrastructure, as well as activities that support the project such as engineering design, procurement and other operational costs. Read the funding guideline for more details.

How to apply

This is an open competitive grant that follows a 2-stage application process. Make sure you read the funding guidelines and frequently asked questions before you begin.
