Important to know

  • Exact peak and off-peak times vary depending on your energy plan, location, meter type, and/or retailer. Peak rates sometimes only apply during winter (June to August) and summer (November to March) periods. Check your electricity bill or your retailer’s website to confirm your exact off-peak and peak times and costs.
  • This only applies if you're on a time-of-use electricity plan. If you're on a flat-rate plan, your electricity costs the same all day. Learn more about time-of-use tariffs.

Tips to save using cheap electricity

These appliances use a lot of electricity, so run them during off-peak or shoulder times to save:

  • air conditioners
  • heaters
  • washing machines
  • dryers
  • ovens
  • dishwashers.

You can use timers, smart plugs, apps or automation systems to schedule these appliances to run when electricity is cheapest. It’s a good idea to space out appliance use so you don’t overload circuits.

If your home or business uses electric hot water systems, pool pumps, underfloor heating, or irrigation pumps, they should have their own separate meter so they can run during off-peak times.

Check you’re on the best energy plan

It’s important to check you’re on the best energy plan for your home or business. A simple switch could save you over $200 a year. Here’s how to find the best deal:

  1. Contact your energy retailer or check your bill

Call your energy retailer and ask about a better energy plan or discounts. They have to tell you if you’re not on the cheapest plan and how to switch. They must also include this information on your bill at least every 100 days. This will also be written on your bill under the heading 'Could you save money on another plan?'

  1. Compare plans using Energy Made Easy

Compare energy plans yourself using the free and independent Australian Government website Energy Made Easy to find the best deal.

Service NSW staff can help you use the Energy Made Easy service. You can call them on 13 77 88 or visit a Service NSW centre.
