Fast charging grants

Key information

Guidelines

We’re working to make NSW the easiest place to own and operate an electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, with a $149 million investment to develop a world-class fast charging network across the state.

The EV fast charging grants program will add approximately 275 fast and ultra-fast charging stations across NSW. This will ensure that fast charging stations are no more than 5 km apart in metropolitan areas and no more than 100 km apart on major roads and highways across NSW.

As a key action under the NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy, investment in fast charging stations will stimulate the growth of the EV market by:

  • overcoming range anxiety through the development of a broad, visible and accessible fast charging network across NSW
  • ensuring connectivity between metropolitan and regional areas
  • future-proofing the EV charging network beyond 2030
  • co-funding private industry to build, own and operate the charging stations
  • maximising grid support while reducing emissions and accelerating our transition to net zero.

Each station will include a minimum of 2 high powered EV chargers, servicing at least 4 charging bays concurrently.

Pictogram representing time

Chargers will allow EVs to achieve a 10 to 80% charge in 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the vehicle's initial state of charge.

Under round 3, 9 stations will feature pull through bays to cater to EV drivers towing caravans, boats and trailers.

The location of all co-funded sites from the fast charging grants program can be found on the map here.

Future Rounds

We are continuing to expand the NSW EV fast charging network and are currently working on round 4 of the fast charging grants, which is expected to open in late 2025. More details will be updated as the program develops. Sign up to receive updates at the bottom of this page.

Round 3 now closed

Round 3 of the EV fast charging grants supported charge point operators (CPOs) to construct fast charging stations across regional and metropolitan NSW. The technical requirements and co-funding caps were adjusted to encourage further charging station development in regional NSW.

$54 million of co-funding was available for new charging stations across 140 zones. The funding was split across 4 distinct funding streams with different funding caps and requirements. These streams were:

  • standard metropolitan
  • fast track
  • standard regional
  • remote regional.

All charging stations funded under round 3 will be constructed over an 18 to 24 month time period.

Application process

The Round 3 EV fast charging grant guidelines provided guidance to applicants who applied in the round. Applicants were instructed to read these guidelines in conjunction with our fast charging grants frequently asked questions.

All applicants used the Department’s nominated online grant management system (GMS), SmartyGrants, for submitting bids and all relevant documentation.

If you have any questions or comments about the EV fast charging grants, please contact our team at [email protected].

NSW needs site hosts for public EV fast charging

The NSW Government supports the development of public EV chargers in many ways. We’re currently looking for land owners and lease holders that may be interested in hosting EV fast charging stations, to provide a list of possible sites to potential developers, also known as charge point operators. Learn more about becoming a site host here.

If you have one or more sites in NSW that would be suitable for public EV charging infrastructure, you can complete an online expression of interest (EOI) form.

NSW electric vehicle public charging master plan

The NSW electric vehicle public charging master plan is designed to identify areas where future EV chargers would provide the greatest benefit, by highlighting optimal zones for public charging stations. It also displays the current and projected public EV charging network across NSW. The NSW Government regularly updates this map to align with the latest project developments, including adjustment to charging station locations as needed.
