Accredited Service Provider (ASP) Scheme

What’s new

New Accredited Service Provider (ASP) online platform

This new online platform makes it easier to manage ASP accreditations online, including applying for new levels or classes, renewing accreditation, updating details and making payments.

It also includes a search tool to help residents find accredited service providers.

The Accredited Service Provider (ASP) Scheme accredits companies to carry out contestable network services in NSW. This includes work to design, construct, or connect and disconnect properties to the electricity distribution network. The Scheme provides customers with access to qualified providers in a competitive and consistent market while helping keep the network safe and reliable.

What is the ASP Scheme

It allows accredited companies (ASPs) to design and construct electricity distribution assets and carry out work to connect or disconnect homes, businesses and developments to the electricity distribution network. For example, new connections, capacity upgrades or relocating assets.

In NSW, only accredited providers can perform these contestable network services, as required under section 31A of the Electricity Supply Act 1995.

Why it matters

  • Safety, quality and consistency: Accreditation, scheme rules and authorisations with distribution network service providers (DNSPs) help ensure the right skills, procedures and standards are applied consistently across the state.
  • Choice and competition: anyone can search and select an accredited and qualified provider for connection and related works.

ASP levels: who does what

The ASP Scheme has 3 accreditation levels. Each level covers different types of contestable network services in NSW:

  • Level 1: Construct or augment electricity distribution network assets (“poles and wires” and underground).
  • Level 2: Construct or change service lines between the distribution network and the point of connection. Energise new or altered connections, and undertake work on network devices (customer owned, e.g. the service protection device) on the main switchboard.
  • Level 3: Design electricity distribution network assets (overhead and underground).

After accreditation, individual workers must be authorised by the local distribution network service provider (DNSP): Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy, to work on or near that network.

Find an accredited provider

You can use the ASP Platform search tool to find accredited providers by location, level and services.

Tips when engaging an ASP:

  • Get at least three quotes and confirm the provider’s level or class is suitable for your job.
  • Ask about timeframes, permits and DNSP requirements (some projects require DNSP design approval and inspections).
