Metering and monitoring systems are a cost-effective way for NSW businesses to manage and reduce their energy use.
These systems use a combination of hardware and software to collect and analyse data about energy performance. This data can then be used to help businesses save energy and cut costs. A well-planned and designed metering and monitoring system can save your business energy and money. Typical energy savings range from 5% to 15%.
Metering and monitoring systems will help you:
- identify simple, low-cost improvements to your systems and processes
- identify energy savings opportunities and build the business case for equipment upgrades
- improve your energy management
- reduce site operating costs
- access Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) and Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) incentives, where some activities require a minimum level of metering to already be in place
- get a NABERS energy rating for your building.
We are investing $12 million to support businesses to get the most out of energy metering and monitoring. This metering package will include support to install meters. It will also provide access to expert services to develop comprehensive metering and monitoring plans and to provide support with energy performance. This will help businesses overcome some of the barriers to implementing energy efficiency projects.
The metering package includes the following initiatives, that will be rolled out over the next 5 years. Each initiative will target a different stage of the metering and monitoring process.

Submetering grants
We are funding up to 50% of the cost of purchasing and installing submeters on equipment, up to $20,000 per site.
Round 1 applications closed on 2 December 2022. All projects must be completed by 30 June 2023.
Metering and monitoring planning
The metering and monitoring planning initiative will give you the opportunity to assess your metering and monitoring needs. It will help you identify gaps in your metering systems and understand your next steps to improve your systems and, subsequently, cut energy use and costs.
Expressions of interest are now open.
