Fast charging master plan

NSW will be the easiest place to buy and use an electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, with a $131 million investment to develop a world-class charging network. Under the NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy, this investment will expand existing public fast charging across the State.

The master plan showcases the current and indicative future network of public EV fast chargers in NSW. A fast charger is an EV charger that is 50 kW and above.

It is the first step in the roll out of guaranteed widespread fast charging, highlighting where stations could be optimally placed. This means EV drivers can be confident they will be able to drive their vehicles whenever and wherever they need to.

Master plan map

You can access the interactive master plan map below or in full screen here.

The map includes functionality to turn on and off different datasets, allowing you to analyse separate datasets at the same time.  Instructions on how to use the map can be found within the tool. The data sets are free to download.

Future locations for fast charging infrastructure (referred to as optimal zones), and the proposed number of chargers for each zone has been determined using a robust methodology. This includes analysing a range of technical, social, and economic considerations. Each optimal zone has been chosen based on:

  • projected electric vehicle adoption in the area
  • traffic movements
  • tourism data
  • vehicle ownership
  • local points of interest
  • location of major cabling across NSW
  • available substation capacities.

If you have any questions or comments about the master plan map please contact the team at electric.vehicles@environment.nsw.gov.au.

Who is the master plan for?

Over the next 4 years, the master plan will help to plan future NSW public EV fast charging stations. The master plan map will also support industry and planners in finding ideal locations for public fast charging stations.

Discover more information about hosting public EV fast charging

Sites within and around the optimal zones indicated on the master plan map will be prioritised for public EV fast charging.

NSW Government will co-fund new public fast and ultra-fast charging stations with multiple charging bays installed and operated by charging point operators (CPOs) through the EV fast charging grants.

Those looking to partner with CPOs to build EV chargers on their site, are encouraged to read our prospectus and fill in an expression of interest to become a site host, when the next registration round is open. This will be twice yearly.
