Submetering grants

Applications now open, apply today

Overview of the grant

This grant supports NSW businesses to install new submeters. Submeters are different to regular utility meters because they provide data about your equipment's performance. This data can then be used to help you save energy. A small investment in metering can have long-term financial benefits.

It can also help your business take advantage of Energy Savings Scheme incentives and other initiatives which require a minimum level of metering to be in place.

The first round of funding is available until 2 December 2022, or until the budget is exhausted.

Available funding

We have $1.5 million in funding available in Round 1. Grants of up to $20,000 (excluding GST) are available to support the purchase and installation of submeters for measuring energy performance.

We will fund up to 50% of incurred costs in a single payment once your project is complete.

All projects must be complete by 30 June 2023. Don’t miss out on funding. The earlier you apply, the longer you have to complete your project.

Who is eligible

These grants are open to NSW businesses with sites that spend a minimum of $200,000 a year on energy bills.  You can apply for one grant per site across NSW.

Further details can be found in the grant guidelines (PDF)

Frequently asked questions

My business has multiple sites in NSW. Can I apply for a grant for each site?

Yes. You can submit an application for each site, as long as they’re based in NSW and have different street addresses.

Is submetering in commercial buildings eligible?

Yes, provided your application is for base building only and the occupancy certificate was issued prior to 1 January 2022. Base building refers to central services like heating and cooling systems.

Is submetering on renewable energy sources eligible?

No. Only metering points on purchased energy sources, steam, air and water that are related to establishing energy performance are eligible. This may include the purchase and installation of permanent metering devices, integration with onsite communication systems and cabling.

What if I can’t complete my project by 30 June 2023?

You can terminate your project at any time by writing to us. You will not be paid for any work to date. You may apply again in future rounds if you have not already started the project.

If we have not received any evidence your project is complete by 30 June 2023, we may terminate your contract and you will not receive payment of the grant. The earlier you apply, the more time you will have to complete your project.

When will I be paid?

You will receive the grant payment when your project is complete and all reporting documentation has been accepted.

What if the installation costs more than the quote I provided in my application?

No upward variations on price are permitted. We will only pay the approved grant amount specified in your funding deed.

What if the installation costs less than the quote I provided in my application?

We will pay 50% of the actual incurred project costs, which may be less than the approved grant amount specified in your funding deed.

I installed my submeters very recently. Am I still eligible to get the grant?

No. We can only pay for submeters installed after you sign a funding deed with us. Any work that began prior to a signed funding deed in place is not eligible for this grant.

My application was rejected. Can I apply again?

Yes, provided applications are still open. We will let you know why your application was rejected so you can make the required changes. We recommend you carefully read the Submetering grants guide before you apply to ensure your project is eligible and you have the required documentation.
