Local councils help shape a resilient NSW

The NSW Government has recently distributed two climate-related surveys to local councils, with a third survey coming soon.

  • All councils with a licensed facility should have already received the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Climate Change Survey.
  • The Local Government Climate Change survey from the Office of Energy and Climate Change was sent to all Councils on 25 August.
  • This will soon be followed by the Disaster Adaptation Plans survey from the NSW Reconstruction Authority.

Time is short and responding to surveys can take time. We recognise this but encourage all councils carve out time to respond. By participating, you are giving us valuable insights to better understand the needs and challenges faced by councils across the state. This will ensure that your council receives support from the NSW Government that is fit-for-purpose and addresses your current needs and barriers.

With the right information, we can work together to secure a resilient and sustainable future for the people of NSW.

Your feedback is invaluable, and we look forward to publishing our findings in the future.

A quick guide to each survey:

NSW EPA Climate Change Survey

About the survey

  • Presented by: NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA)
  • Who should participate?  It is a mandatory survey for licensees under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act (1997)

Why participate?

This survey is an opportunity to let the EPA know how your licensed facilities are contributing to NSW climate change objectives to mitigate emissions and reduce climate risks. The EPA will use this insight to provide support to build councils’ capacity to take meaningful action on climate change.

Deadline

  • Return by: 5pm, Friday 15 September 2023

More information

  • Licensees can access the survey via a unique link that will be emailed or mailed directly to the designated licence contact(s)

Why participate?

This survey seeks to understand local government’s readiness to respond to the impacts of climate change. Your feedback will inform the design and delivery of climate adaptation and mitigation resources, strategies, and funding opportunities to support your council and community.

The 2023 survey is the third Local Government Climate Change Survey – it was also completed in 2015 and 2018. Past surveys have helped build the business case and design of programs which provided $3.9m in funding to local government.
