It’s now easier for car buyers to see how clean and affordable their next car could be, with the NSW Government-developed Vehicle Emissions Star Rating (VESR) now live on RedBook, one of Australia’s most popular vehicle research platforms.
Developed by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), VESR gives eligible light vehicles sold in Australia since 2004 a simple six-star rating based on its tailpipe CO2 emissions – the more stars, the fewer emissions.
Through its integration with RedBook, VESR ratings now appear as a search filter and as a rating displayed directly in search results, connecting environmental performance with real-world running cost information.
Users can also access VESR’s customisable calculator to estimate how much they could save on fuel or energy costs each year based on their own driving patterns, fuel prices or electricity rates.
The new integration puts clear, trusted information in front of people right when they are researching their next car, making it easier for car buyers to choose options that are cleaner and cheaper to run.
RedBook is one of Australia’s most trusted automotive data providers, widely used across the automotive, insurance, finance and fleet sectors.
The collaboration between the NSW Government and RedBook helps extend the reach of VESR to a wide audience of car buyers, right where they are searching, supporting the Government’s commitment to helping households make informed, climate-friendly choices as part of the NSW Net Zero Plan 2020–2030.

“This collaboration puts reliable emissions, fuel and energy cost information directly in front of people when they’re researching their next car, whether new or used.
“From family hatchbacks to high-performance models, VESR helps drivers make informed decisions before they hit the road.
“It means NSW households can compare options quickly and confidently and understand the long-term benefits of choosing a lower-emissions vehicle.”
RedBook Australia General Manager Adrian Givoye said:
“We’re excited to collaborate with the NSW DCCEEW to help make emissions and cost information more accessible for car buyers.
“By integrating VESR into RedBook, we’re helping consumers make smarter, more sustainable choices with confidence.”
