Energy supplier performance

The competitive energy market was introduced to benefit consumers through better service and prices. To help ensure consumers can get the best from the competitive market, the government established a range of protections and measures to assist consumers. For example, the Energy Marketing Code of Conduct ensures that energy suppliers treat consumers fairly. Consumers also have the right to make complaints and get assistance in sorting out any problems with their supplier.

Consumers need a reliable supply of energy. The government has introduced rigorous standards for electricity networks to ensure improved reliability. These standards are backed by compensation payments to consumers when the network's performance falls below the standards. Other arrangements known as Retailer of Last Resort have also been put in place to reduce the risk of a loss of supply.
